During the period from 1788 to 1868, about 165,000 convicts were sent to Australia.  Tasmania – formerly Van Diemen’s Land and the primary penal colony at the time, is the focus of the 3 tours below.  Accompanied by an expert on Australia’s convict history, these tours offer an insight into the grim and isolated lives of the convicts and settlers and how they forged this fascinating country at the end of the world.
